Charity event to mark the World Alzheimer Day
Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky welcomed members of Alzheimer Society and Dementia UK for a dinner before the World Alzheimer’s Ball 2018, an annual event which takes place since 2016.
The Ambassador commended the compassionate work of Director Michael Dent in raising public awareness in relation to the illness. The event also offered an excellent opportunity to present the Healthy Hungary Strategy, which aims to achieve public health objectives, among them to alleviate the suffering of the appx. 2.5% of the Hungarian population affected by various forms of dementia.
V4 meeting with DUP MPs
As part of the Hungarian V4 Presidency, Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky hosted Democratic Unionist Party MPs Westminster leader Nigel Dodds QBE and Sir Jeffrey Donaldson chief whip.
Together with the Czech, Polish and Slovakian ambassadors the parties discussed devolution in Northern Ireland, the state of play on Brexit, its impact on Northern Ireland and the upcoming priorities for Westminster.
Panel discussion inspired by „TECHtonic Shifts”, the new book of Ambassador Dr Zoltán Cséfalvay
The Embassy of Hungary in London hosted the book launch of the TECHtonic Shifts written by Dr Zoltán Cséfalvay Ambassador of Hungary to the OECD & the UNESCO.
During the panel discussion following the introduction by the Ambassador, the panellists, David Halpern (Chief Executive of the Behavioural Insights Team and Board Director) and Raffaella Tenconi (Managing Director, ADA Economics Ltd.) shared their views on technology shifts and challenges of the future.
Minister Péter Szijjártó visited London
Minister Péter Szijjártó arrived for a one-day visit in London, where he met Secretary of State for Defence and Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. To mark the completion of the Hungarian V4 Presidency he held a lecture about foreign policy challenges facing Central-Europe in the imposing Chatham House.
Before meeting high level government officials the Minister held a keynote speech at a conference organised by the London Stock Exchange on the V4 capital markets, where he referred to the Visegrad 4 as the growth engine of Europe.
Afterwards he met Secretary of State for Defence Gavin Williamson and Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Greg Clark to discuss future bilateral relations.
In his statement to the Hungarian News Agency, Minister Szijjártó explained that “Hungary regards the maintaining of security cooperation with the UK as extremely important in view of the fact that the EU is facing major security-related challenges, with relation to which British intelligence and defence capacities cannot be ignored”.
The Minister later the evening held a lecture in Chatham House titled ’The European and Foreign policy challenges: The V4 perspective’. The official visit concluded with the annual Gala Dinner of the UK-Hungary Business Council, a forum formed in 2016 for the representatives of the biggest British investors in Hungary.
Norman Irons awarded the Hungarian Order of Merit
At a ceremony at the Embassy of Hungary in London on 11 July 2018 Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, on behalf of János Áder, President of Hungary, presented the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of Hungary to Norman Irons.
The award is in recognition for his long standing activity in protecting and promoting the interests and rights of Hungary and its citizens in Scotland, as well as in strengthening economic, cultural, commercial and scientific relations between Hungary and the United Kingdom.
Ambassador Szalay-Bobrovniczky pointed out that Mr Irons performed his work with outstanding efficiency and professionalism, showing empathy towards those Hungarians who needed his help. At the same time utilizing his excellent relations with actors of politics and economy, with the Academy, Arts and the Churches for the benefit of Hungary.
Norman Irons said in his acceptance speech that it was a pleasure and privilege for him to work with Hungarians and work for the welfare of Hungarian people.
Ambassador met the head of the Coptic Orthodox Church
They discussed the current situation of Christian minorities in the Middle East and the Ambassador informed the Archbishop about the activities of the Hungarian government to support persecuted Christian communities.
The PM’s Spokesperson in London
Mr Zoltán Kovács during his one-day-trip to London met British and international journalists, had a discussion with representatives of leading think tanks and gave interviews to prominent local TV channels.
The spokesperson hosted a background talk with representative of prominent British and international media, where he described the Hungarian government’s standpoint after the vote of the Sargentini-report, claiming that it is certainly political revenge for the Hungarian stance on migration. He responded to further questions about the campaign topics of the upcoming EP elections. Afterwards he gave interviews to Channel 4, ITV and BBC World news programmes.
The Embassy participates for the first time in the Open House London 2018 series
The Open House London participation of the Embassy of Hungary was a great success. The visitors were in awe of the architecture and the interior design and enthusiastic about the programmes.
The Embassy of Hungary in London opened its doors for the first time in the framework of the Open House London series on 22-23 September 2018. Almost 500 people participated at our tours and programmes. The visitors were grateful for the insight into the work of diplomats by Deputy Ambassador Beáta Margitay-Becht and the behind-the scened description of the refurbishment process by interior designers Helen Bampton and Karen Sumner on the first day. Our guests enjoyed the Hungarikum-day with the music and dance performance by Hunique Dance Ensemble and the Hungarian tasting table with the support of the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture on the second day. The exhibition of the Hungarian painter Dénes Maróti, the FIFA Puskás award replica and the Hungarian innovation corner (showcasing Rubik Cubes and the „Gömböc”) also found its fan-base.
Minister Gergely Gulyás in London
Hungary’s Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office Gergely Gulyás arrived in London for a one-day working visit on 11 October 2018.
Minister Gulyás, who is also responsible for EU affairs, met Home Secretary Sajid Javid to discuss the rights of Hungarian citizens living in the UK and British citizens residing in Hungary in light of Brexit, respecting the outcome of the 2016 Brexit referendum, as well as the future of the EU-UK security partnership against the backdrop of emerging cross-border threats. During his discussion with David Lidington, the Minister for the Cabinet Office and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster the ongoing Brexit negotiations, the future of Europe and the possibilities to strengthen bilateral relations in the future were the main topics. He exchanged views with Minister of State at the Department for Exiting the European Union Lord Callanan the current state of the Brexit negotiations and the upcoming European Parliamentary elections. Minister Gergely Gulyás continued his visit in London with meeting prominent members of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, among others Bob Neill, the Chairman of the Hungarian All-Party Parliamentary Group and former Minister Greg Hands, and also representatives of think tanks, with whom they had an exchange of views on Hungarian and British domestic policy developments, inevitably Brexit and also the potential of the future, post-Brexit bilateral cooperation of Hungary and the UK.
First Conference of Hungarian Teachers in London
The two-days event provided an opportunity for teachers working in Hungarian Saturday schools in the UK to learn from professionals and their peers.
Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky opened the 1st Conference of Teachers’ in Hungarian Saturday Schools in the UK. The two-days event organised by the Hungarian Embassy, the Hungarian Cultural Centre and the National Federation of Hungarians in the UK sponsored by the State Secretary for Hungarian Communities Abroad provided an opportunity for teachers to learn from professionals and their peers about teaching methodology, management and parent-teacher/children-teacher relationships. The Ambassador praised the dedication of the teachers who sacrifice their time for the sake of preserving the Hungarian language and Hungarian culture and thus the Hungarian nation itself.

Wreath-laying ceremony of 1956's uprising
The event was attended by the Ambassador of Hungary and Poland, as well as the Mayor of Westminster.
To commemorate the Hungarian uprising in 1956, Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky and Arkady Rzegocki, Ambassador of Poland laid wreaths at the memorial plaque at the Polish Hearth Club in London. The memorial plaque was commissioned by the British-Hungarian Fellowship and the Polish community in London in 1957 in memory of victims of the revolution.
Commemoration of the 1956 Hungarian revolution in the National Army Museum
Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky hosted a reception to commemorate the 62nd anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian revolution and freedom fight in the National Army Museum.
The Ambassador in his speech remembered the heroes of those most noble 20 days of 20th century history, who fought against oppression and to defend their freedom. The Guest of Honour of the event, Minister of State for Defence and Deputy Leader of the House of Lords Lord Howe who expressed his appreciation towards the 1956’ uprising, the Hungarian military tradition and praised the amicable relations between the UK and Hungary.
The event also served as the opening of an exhibition showcasing Hungarian Hussars and their influence on British cavalry. Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Defence of Hungary Csaba Vezekényi represented the Hungarian Ministry of Defence Military History Institute and Museum which worked together with the National Army Museum on this common project. The Director of the National Army Museum Justin Maciejewski detailed how British regiments adopted the Hungarian uniform, weapons, tactics and identity of Hungarian Hussars and invited all the guests to visit the Museum once the full exhibition is open to the public on 29 November 2018.

Deputy Minister’s visit in London
Deputy Minister Balázs Orbán and Deputy State Secretary Ernő Schaller-Baross had a two-day-visit in London, where they had talks with high-profile politicians, Christian leaders, journalists and think tankers.
Deputy Minister Balázs Orbán and Under Secretary of State Ernő Schaller-Baross visited London on 12th and 13th November 2018, where they met high-ranking government officials, Members of Parliament and prominent think tank leaders to discuss the excellent relations between the United Kingdom and Hungary, the current state of the Brexit negotiations, the on-going political changes in Europe, the importance of aiding persecuted Christian and the successes of the Hungary Helps programme.

Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky during his official visit to Wales not only awarded the Honorary Consul of Hungary, but held meetings with a prominent community leaders and businessmen from the region.
Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky conducted his third official visit in Wales on 22-23 November 2018. As a highlight of the trip, Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, presented the Order of Merit of Hungary to Alun Davies for his long-standing activity as the Honorary Consul of Hungary in Wales in the presence of Morfudd Meredith, Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for South Glamorgan.
During his stay, the Hungarian Ambassador met the Leader of the Welsh Conservatives Paul Davis AM and held a discussion with the Lord Mayor, Councillor Dianne Rees. Ambassador Szalay-Bobrovniczky met a number of community leaders and businessmen from the region and visited Cardiff University. He met with Prof Kevin Morgan, Dean of Engagement and Matthew Turner from the newly established National Software Academy and gave a presentation to business, politics and journalism majoring students.
Career networking event at the Embassy of Hungary
Multinational companies active in the financial services industry cooperated with the Embassy to organise the event.
The Embassy of Hungary organised a career networking event to help to identify new opportunities arising at the Budapest offices of BlackRock, Citibank, and Morgan Stanley for students and young professionals interested in the financial services industry.
The visit of Justice Minister László Trócsányi
Smooth legal cooperation between the UK and Hungary is very important, regardless of the direction that the process of the cessation of Britain’s EU membership (Brexit) might take, Justice Minister László Trócsányi said in London.
On 29 November 2018 the Justice Minister had talks with his British counterpart David Gauke about their views on current challenges in the justice system and post-Brexit cooperation in criminal and civil judicial matters at the Embassy of Hungary upon the invitation of Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky.
Furthermore he met Baroness Natalie Evans, Leader of the House of Lords, member of the British Cabinet, Bob Neill MP, Chair of the Justice Committee of the House of Commons and Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Hungary Group and Sir William Cash MP, chair of the European Scrutiny Committee.
After his talks, Mr Trócsányi told the Hungarian news agency MTI that cooperation between the two countries currently equally extends to the areas of civil law, family law, trade law and penal law. Thanks to the large Hungarian community living in Britain and the intensive commercial and judicial relations, the two countries are connected together by “a thousand ties”, he added.
Ministerial talks in Chevening
The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó arrived in Chevening upon the invitation of Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt to participate at talks about current challenges in security policy.
The Minister took part in an informal meeting of foreign ministers of the countries of the Visegrád Group (V4), Slovenia, Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania, at the invitation of his British counterpart Jeremy Hunt at the Foreign Secretary’s country residence in Chevening, Southeast England. The discussions with his counterparts focused on current challenges in security policy.
At the site of the meeting, Mr. Szijjártó told the Hungarian news agency MTI: “The region expects the EU to achieve a Brexit agreement that can be acknowledged as fair by both parties”. “The lack of such agreement would grossly violate the interests of Central Europe in view of the fact that the region realises an extremely high level of trade turnover with the United Kingdom and there is a major level of British investment in the region’s economies. In addition, millions of people from the countries of Central Europe live and work in the United Kingdom and their rights must also be guaranteed”, he added.

Plaque commemorates Puskás’s charity game in Liverpool
Mayor of Budapest Tarlós unveiled a blue plaque to mark a charity match in 1967.
The Mayor of Budapest István Tarlós unveiled a blue plaque to mark Ferenc Puskás’ charity game in Liverpool with Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky and Ambassador György Szöllősi. In 1967 one of the world’s greatest footballers arrived here to play at a non-league ground helping raise funds for the local Bankfield House community centre. Four decades later Holly Park was demolished to make way for Liverpool South Parkway station where a permanent reminder of the game was positioned thanks to the effort led by the former Hungarian Honorary Consul in Liverpool, Dr Andras Zsigmond. Mayor Tarlós continued his official visit meeting Steve Rotheram, Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region.
