The visit of Justice Minister László Trócsányi
Smooth legal cooperation between the UK and Hungary is very important, regardless of the direction that the process of the cessation of Britain’s EU membership (Brexit) might take, Justice Minister László Trócsányi said in London.
On 29 November 2018 the Justice Minister had talks with his British counterpart David Gauke about their views on current challenges in the justice system and post-Brexit cooperation in criminal and civil judicial matters at the Embassy of Hungary upon the invitation of Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky.
Furthermore he met Baroness Natalie Evans, Leader of the House of Lords, member of the British Cabinet, Bob Neill MP, Chair of the Justice Committee of the House of Commons and Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Hungary Group and Sir William Cash MP, chair of the European Scrutiny Committee.
After his talks, Mr Trócsányi told the Hungarian news agency MTI that cooperation between the two countries currently equally extends to the areas of civil law, family law, trade law and penal law. Thanks to the large Hungarian community living in Britain and the intensive commercial and judicial relations, the two countries are connected together by “a thousand ties”, he added.
Plaque commemorates Puskás’s charity game in Liverpool
Mayor of Budapest Tarlós unveiled a blue plaque to mark a charity match in 1967.
The Mayor of Budapest István Tarlós unveiled a blue plaque to mark Ferenc Puskás’ charity game in Liverpool with Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky and Ambassador György Szöllősi. In 1967 one of the world’s greatest footballers arrived here to play at a non-league ground helping raise funds for the local Bankfield House community centre. Four decades later Holly Park was demolished to make way for Liverpool South Parkway station where a permanent reminder of the game was positioned thanks to the effort led by the former Hungarian Honorary Consul in Liverpool, Dr Andras Zsigmond. Mayor Tarlós continued his official visit meeting Steve Rotheram, Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region.
A Hussar Exhibition has opened in London
An exhibition showcasing the common Hungarian and British hussar traditions was opened on 6th December 2018 with the title ’Call in the Cavalry’ thanks to the collaboration of the National Army Museum and the Hungarian Military History Institute and Museum.
At the opening ceremony Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky highlighted: there was a time in history when the whole world copied the Hungarians and emphasized that the hussar tradition expresses the Hungarian soul, our freedom-loving, warrior spirit and therefore it is an important element of our national brand.
Ian Maine, the assistant director of the NAM praised the common legacy of British and Hungarian hussar regiments now schowcased in the museum and the excellent contribution of the Hungarian Military Museum and Institute.
General Sir Richard Shirreff – as a former hussar himself – stressed how important role the hussary played in the life of the British Army, and how proudly they remembered the Hungarian links.
The exhibition introduces the hussary’s first appearance in the Kingdom of Hungary in the 15th century until the adoption of their style in the British Army. The visitors can explore the excellent descriptions and the various pieces of uniform and weaponry, as well as learn about historical personalities wearing hussar uniforms such as the former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
The exhibition is open until 9 June 2019 in the National Army Museum.
The ambassador met doctors working in the UK
The informal meeting took place in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of the renowned Hungarian doctor Ignác Semmelweis.
Ambassador Szalay-Bobrovniczky Kristóf invited Hungarian medical professionals and interested parties to the Embassy of Hungary for a tea-time discussion on the future of medical professions in the UK.
Sir Barney White-Spunner was awarded
He received the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of Hungary for developing British-Hungarian historical and cultural ties.
Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky hosted a reception to honour Lieutenant General Sir Barney White-Spunner, former British Army officer who received the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of Hungary. Sir Barney was influential in developing British-Hungarian historical and cultural ties. Sir Barney supported both the ’Call in the Cavalry’ exhibition on British-Hungarian hussar traditions in the National Army Museum and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s recent concert showcasing Béla Bartók’s and Ferenc Kodály’s music.
Cambridge-Oxford Alumni Club dinner at the Embassy
The annual event hosting the members of Cambridge-Oxford Alumni Club was organised at the Embassy of Hungary.
Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky hosted an annual dinner for the members of the Cambridge Oxford Alumni Club on 19th February 2019 following the inaugural event of the Alumni Club which took place at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2018. The guest of honour of the event was Elisabeth Kiss, the leader of the Rhodes Trust in Oxford.
Twenty years in NATO
The Embassy of Hungary, the Embassy of the Czech Republic and the Embassy of Poland celebrated together the 20th anniversary of their accession to NATO.
The event took place in the National Army Museum in London, where an exhibition of the Hungarian and Polish NATO contributions were also showcased. Hungary joined the military alliance in 1999 as the first one from the former East Bloc countries, supported by 85% of the population at a referendum. Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky in his speech emphasized that the main challenge of our time is to preserve the security of our continents amongst chaotic international situation and terrorist threats. The Chief of Staff of the British Army, General Nick Carter underlined the importance of like-minded alliances and partners, praising the historic choice made by the three countries 20 years ago whereby they expressed their wish to stay independent irrevocably by joining the NATO-family.
Hungarian books were donated by the Ambassador
The Saint Stephen House enriched by two hundred books.
Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky donated almost 200 books written by Hungarian authors and about the Hungarian diaspora to the refurbished library of Saint Stephen House - Association of Roman Catholic Hungarians in Great Britain, represented by Edit Suhajda, Member of the Board and Attila Korpos, Secretary and Member of the Board.
Visit of the Ambassador in Bristol
Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky was welcomed in Bristol by Mayor Tim Bowles, West England Combined Authority. The Hungarian delegation, supplemented with representatives of INPUT startup development program, held succesful talks with prominent representatives and stakeholders of Business West (Bristol Chamber of Commerce) and the local economy to explore opportunites in future co-operation in the field of innovation.
Duke of York’s visit at the Embassy of Hungary
Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky hosted HRH Prince Andrew and discussed possibilities for future cooperation, including the continuation of the successful Pitch@Palace Hungary project.
The Duke supports numerous initiatives which promote the entrepreneurial activity, among those the most important and most successful one is Pitch@Palace start-up contest, which had its round in 2018 in Budapest.
Dinner in honour of Bertalan de Némethy 2019
On 30th April Ambassador Szalay-Bobrovniczky hosted the annual black tie dinner in honour of Bertalan de Némethy at the Embassy of Hungary.
Hungary aims to be recognized once again as a center for excellence in equestrian sports, where the United Kingdom is one of the major players. Therefore this occasion provided the opportunity to introduce the Hungarian bid to host the 2021 FEI European Championships and to introduce Vince Jármy, a talented young Hungarian showjumper. At this dinner we had the pleasure of welcoming Simon Brooks-Ward, organizer of the Royal Windsor Horse Show, Colin Brooks, Chairman of the Royal Windsor Horse Show, Lord de Mauley, Conservative MP and supporter of the equestrian sports, Nick Skelton Olympic champion in show jumping, representatives of the organizing committee of the Olympia Horse Show, Brigadier Archie Miller-Bakewell, Private Secretary to The Duke of Edinburgh and Justin Maciejewski, the director of the National Army Museum. Moreover prominent representatives of the equestrian sports, horse breeders, organizers of competitions and representatives of cavalry regiments were among the distinguished guests.
Bertalan de Némethy (1911-2002), the former show jumping coach of the United States Equestrian Team was a legendary figure and icon in the horse world. He was born in Győr, Hungary and began his career as an officer in the Hungarian Cavalry and a member of the Hungarian Olympic Jumping Team. After emigrating to the United States, he became the coach of the US Equestrian Team, a post he held between 1955-1980. De Némethy formulated his own training techniques for both horse and rider based on his Hungarian Cavalry School background and the principles of classical equitation. From this evolved the celebrated “de Némethy style,” the precision and elegance of which are emulated throughout the world today.
Meeting with the participants of the Kőrösi Csoma Sándor Program
Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky hosted a meeting with participants of the Kőrösi Csoma Sándor Program (KCSP) on 7 May 2019, who help to organize Hungarian events and teach Hungarian language and folk dance.
The KCSP participants, who arrived from Edinburgh, Birmingham, Coventry, Chester, Cardiff, Newport, Hull, Southend and London shared their experiences about the Hungarian communities in the UK. The Ambassador in his speech reminded them of the importance of their activity and thanked them for their tremendous work.
„History of the Hungarian Constitution” book launch
Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky participated at the launch of the „History of the Hungarian Constitution” book at the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies.
Edited by Dr Thomas Lorman and Dr Ferenc Hörcher, it is the only book in English that deals with the history of Hungary’s constitutional identity from the medieval age through the Habsburg rule to the Hungarian Basic Law of 2011.
During the event, the Ambassador, Dr Lorman, Dr Hörcher, Professor Martyn Rady and Professor Philip Barker discussed the history and relevance of Hungary’s historical constitution with the students of UCL. Ambassador Szalay-Bobrovniczky presented the official illustrated edition of the 2011 Basic Law to the School of Slavonic and East European Studies.

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Hungarian National Assembly in London
Mr Zsolt Németh, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Hungarian National Assembly, visited London to participate in a PACE Monitoring Committee meeting of the Council of Europe.
During his visit to London, Mr Németh held bilateral discussions with David Lidington MP, Minister for the Cabinet Office to exchange views about post-Brexit foreign and security policy cooperation and Tom Tugendhat MP Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Commons to discuss bilateral relations, including cooperation opportunities between their committees and the future of conservative parties.
During the visit, Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovnicky welcomed Mr Németh and other prominent actors of the British political life for a working dinner.
Hungarian performers at the Royal Windsor Horse Show
Hungarian csikós and horseback archery performance at the 2019 Royal Windsor Horse Show
Taking place on the grounds of Windsor Castle, the Royal Windsor Horse Show is the UK’s largest outdoor premier equestrian spectacle graced by the presence of Her Majesty the Queen. This year the event celebrated the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Queen Victoria.
Following the initiative of the Embassy of Hungary the organizers of the RWHS selected the participation of Hungarian csikós and horseback archery experts for the Pageant this year. Six csikós horse-herdsman and a Puszta Five formation from the Mátai Ménes, plus the Kassai Horseback Archery School participated in the Show. Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said that Hungary places emphasis on the equestrian traditions, and that this event was a successful initiative not only in terms of sport diplomacy but in country promotion as well. We were able to showcase the Hungarian excellency in equestrian sports and to display an ancient and less known face of Hungary.

National Defence Day 2019
On 21 May, Hungary celebrates the National Defence Day, honouring all those serving in the Hungarian Defence Force.
To mark this day, Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky and Defence Attaché Col Viktor Makay welcomed officers from the UK's Ministry of Defence, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the British Armed Forces, the diplomatic corps and other civilian partners at the Embassy for a reception.
In his speech, Ambassador Szalay-Bobrovniczky praised Hungary’s past military accomplishments and successes, while Colonel Makay highlighted the objectives of the Zrínyi 2026 military development scheme and Hungary’s international engagement, adding that Hungary is proud to be serving in international cooperations, such as NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission, which - joined by the UK and Spain - Hungary currently leads.
UK-Hungary Creative Industries Dinner focusing on the film industry and the legacy of Sir Alexander Korda
Ambassador Szalay-Bobrovniczky Kristóf welcomed distinguished guests at the UK-Hungary Creative Industries Dinner focusing on the film industry and the legacy of Sir Alexander Korda, the prominent Hungarian born British film producer on 23rd May.
Our distinguished guests included Lord Julian Fellowes, Academy Award winning screenwriter, producer, director; David Parfitt, Academy Award winning producer, Liz Barron, producer, Rosie Alison, producer, Barnaby Thomas, director, producer and owner of Ealing Studios; Philip Knatchnull, CEO of Curzon World, and other prominent members of the British film industry. During the evening, our guests watched a short documentary on the life of Sir Alexander Korda produced by the Hungarian National Film Fund, and learned about the incentives to produce films in Hungary.
Delegation of the Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture in London
The Embassy of Hungary welcomed the delegation of the Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture (HCA).
The guests were welcomed by Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovnicky and Agricultural and Environmental attaché Enikő Magyar. During the visit the delegation met representatives of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the National Farmers Union (NFU).
Ambassador Szalay-Bobrovniczky highlighted that the UK is Hungary’s 10th biggest trading partner in terms of agriculture. The bilateral trade in goods in the recent years has gone up (by 67% in the last seven years), and the agricultural export in 2018 was close to 240 million GBP. The Ambassador stressed that Hungary remains committed to working closely with the UK, and welcomes the interest in economic and professional collaboration from all parties. He confirmed that the Embassy – most of all the agricultural and environmental attaché – is ready to give all support to the representatives of the Hungarian and the British agriculture in order to further develop the cooperation between the two countries.
Philip Hambling, Head of Food and Farming at the NFU and John Powell, Deputy Team Leader of the Environmental Management Team at DEFRA spoke about the challenges of British agriculture, the development and directions of agricultural research, the new support schemes for agriculture and the possibilities for cooperation after Brexit.
Annual meeting with the Honorary Consuls of Hungary
Ambassador Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky held the 2019 annual meeting of Honorary Consuls of Hungary in the UK with Alun Davies (Cardiff, Wales), Kenneth Belshaw (Belfast, Northern Ireland) and Gordon Malcolm Oliver (Torquay, England) to provide an update on Hungary’s foreign policy and other issues. The Honorary Consuls also met their colleagues to discuss consular matters of common interest.
Hungarian Ambassador’s Cup
On Saturday, 13th July, the Cowdray Park Polo Club hosted the 2nd Hungarian Ambassador’s Cup, sponsored by the Hungarian Tourism Agency.
After the success of the first event last year, Hungary supported one of the Quarter Finals of the prestigious King Power Gold Cup for the second year in a row. The Ambassador presented the handsome Hungarian Ambassadors Cup, commissioned by the Hungarian Tourism Agency, to the winning team, VS King Power, and rewarded the best playing pony of the match. The event provided opportunity to present Hungary’s achievements in equestrian sports and to introduce its potential in equestrian tourism.
