In case you cannot show your previous, still valid passport when you come to the Consular Office, you will need to file an official report on its whereabouts (stolen, lost or destroyed).

In case the applicant cannot prove his/her existing Hungarian citizenship using a Hungarian passport or ID card, a citizenship certificate issued within the previous 3 years, or a naturalisation certificate, and his/her citizenship is not proven either by the Hungarian personal data and address register, and

  • his/her marriage and/or divorce solemnised abroad has already been registered in Hungary, the applicant may submit the passport application, however, the new passport can only be issued if the Hungarian citizenship of the applicant is verified by a procedure that the Consular Office has to initiate in such cases. Procedures for the verification of citizenship will extend the passport application process by 6-12 months on average.

Once the citizenship has been verified, the applicant will be entered into the personal data and address register either as a “Hungarian citizen living in Hungary” or as a “Hungarian citizen living abroad” as per his/her choice. The applicant will also receive an address card as proof of his/her entry into the personal data and address register.
