Application for a new passport can be submitted anytime, even if the previous one is still valid.
The previous passport will be invalidated when applying for a new passport, however, upon request, it can be returned for travel until the new document is issued; this case the new passport can only be collected in person and the old one will be invalidated at the same time.
Used or expired emergency travel documents must be returned to the Consular Office.
If you cannot present your valid passport, you must give your written statement about its whereabouts (stolen, lost or damaged).
If you cannot collect your new passport in person, we can send it by post. To this end, we recommend bringing a pre-paid "Special Delivery" envelope with you, as this is the fastest way to guarantee the delivery of the passport.
The application for an electronic passport replacement has been ceased through the Client Gate services since 1st February, 2025. The service is expected to be available on the Personalized Administrative Interface (SZÜF) via magyarorszag.hu link, from approx. 1st of July, 2025.
