Registration of marriage

Registration of marriage concluded abroad

A., Hungarian citizens should register their marriages concluded abroad. 
Applications should be submitted in person at the Consular Office and by appointment only. You can book appointments here. For further information about appointments please click here.  Please note that both parties/applicants should appear in person for the appointment!

B., Processing time is 75 days, no emergency procedure is possible. (Please note that processing time may be extended especially in case of incomplete applicationsThe consular office does not assume responsibility for any damages resulting from this.

C., required documents for the registration of marriage:

1.      Original marriage certificate

2.      Application form (downloadable at the bottom of the page)

3.      Proof if the previous marriage(s) endeddue to  divorce or the death of spouse 

• In certain cases of  divorce the Brussels II form filled in and stamped by the court declaring the divorce

4.      Proof of Hungarian citizenship

5.      Proof of foreign citizenship

6.      Document to prove the married name of the foreign national spouse (e.g. passport ordeed poll , etc.)

7.      Registration as a Hungarian citizen living abroad (optional)

8.      Proof of address card, or in its absence, a signed statement from the Hungarian citizen on the reason for the lack of the address card.

1. Original marriage certificate (this is required in ALL cases)

If the marriage was concluded in a country other than the UK you might need to get an Apostille or diplomatic legalisation from the country of marriage. For further information please contact us (via email) or the Hungarian Embassy accredited to the country of marriage.

  • There is no need for translation:
    if the marriage certificate is issued in English, German or French (except if it is handwritten and/or contains a comment)
  • If the marriage certificate is issued in other languages a legalised translation should be enclosed. The translation can be prepared by the Hungarian Gazette Publishing Legal Translation Centre Ltd. (MKIFK) (previously known as Hungarian Office for Translation and Attestation Ltd (OFFI)) - http://www.offi.hu/en, or the translation can be legalised by the competent Hungarian Consulate.

2. Completed and signed application form.

Please fill in the application form in Hungarian with block capital letters in accordance with the rules of the Hungarian language. The application form can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.

3. Proof of marital status prior to the marriage (and translation thereof)

To prove divorced marital status:

  a) If you were divorced before getting married again: final court decision about the divorce (with Hungarian translation);

  b) If the marriage was dissolved within the EU between 1 May 2004 and 31 December 2020 please submit the certificate issued by the court in accordance with Brussels II regulation , Certificate referred to in Article 39 of Council Regulation (EC) No. 2201/2003 of November 2003 concerning judgments in matrimonial matters – form D180 can be downloaded from here

In Scotland it is referred to as Form of Certificate under Article 39 of Council Regulation (EC) No. 2201/2003 of November 2003, concerning jurisdiction and the recognition and enforcement of judgments in matrimonal matters and the matters of parental responsibility for children of booth spouses –  form F42.

This certificate does not need to be translated in Hungarian.

If you were widow(er) before getting married again: death certificate of the deceased spouse.

The documents mentioned in this point 3. should be submitted in case of Hungarian nationals as a general rule.

4. Proof of Hungarian nationality

Valid passport, valid identity card or certificate of nationality wich has been issued within the past 3 years.

5. Proof of nationality in respect of the non-Hungarian party

Valid passport.

6.Registration of a married name for the foreign national spouse is possible only on the basis of a relevant foreign document  (e.g. foreign passport, name change certificate). 

7. If the Hungarian party does not have a place of residence in Hungary (Hungarian address card with a Hungarian address) or a registered address abroad (address card with “Külföldi cím”), the registration as a Hungarian citizen living abroad should  be requested on the form called "Adatlap külföldi magyar állampolgárként történő nyilvántartásba vételhez" (see at the bottom of the pageThe residence card is issued in Hungary for a fee specified in the "Consular Fees" on the website. 

8-9. A new address card may be applied for in case of change of name as a result of the marriage. The residence card is issued in Hungary for a fee specified in the "Consular Fees" on the website and the necessarí form can be downloaded from this page.

D. Application for an identity card after registration of the marriage

The issuance of an identity card due to a name change resulting from marriage is free of charge if:

-        the identity card is requested within 90 days of the marriage;

-        the marriage has been registered in Hungary and 

-        the name change was entered in the personal data and address register.
