General information regarding public documents to be attached to applications
Legalisation is not required for public documents issued by the authorities of European Union Member States, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, or Australia, when these documents are to be used in Hungary.
For documents issued by the authorities of other countries, please contact us at citizenship.lon@mfa.gov.hu.
A Hungarian translation is required if:
- the details in the birth, marriage, or death certificate being submitted are partly or entirely handwritten; or
- the birth, marriage, or death certificate being submitted was completed electronically (by computer or typewriter), but contains comments or clauses;
- the birth, marriage, or death certificate being submitted was not issued in English, German, or French;
- the birth, marriage, or death certificate being submitted was issued in English, German, or French, but that language is not an official language of the issuing country.
Birth, marriage, and death certificates must be submitted either in their original form or as a certified copy issued by the competent civil registry office. A photocopy, or a copy certified by a notary or another person, is not acceptable.
The Consulate can certify copies for a fee (certifying a copy you have made, provided the original document is presented) or can make a certified copy for you. Please always bring the original certificate with you to your appointment.
Other documents issued in a language other than Hungarian (e.g. a decree absolute or a name-change document) must be submitted with an official Hungarian translation.
In all cases, documents must be translated directly from the official language of the given country into Hungarian. Intermediate translations are not accepted.
What type of translation is acceptable?
- An official Hungarian translation certified by MKIFK, which can most easily be obtained in the United Kingdom through Bonaventura Fordítóiroda: https://bonaventura.uk/translation/
- In case of Romanian and Slovenian documents, translations prepared by translators licensed by the Ministry of Justice are also accepted. For Ukrainian documents, translations endorsed by a Ukrainian notary are accepted, as well as translations prepared by the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the county chambers of commerce and industry. For Slovakian and Serbian documents, translations prepared by court interpreters are accepted (without consular legalisation). Please note in particular that these translators and other authorised persons are not authorised to make certified copies for use in Hungarian proceedings. Therefore, when submitting a copy prepared by them, the original document must also be presented in every case.
- A multilingual translation aid is also available under the regulation (EU) 2016/1191 on public documents.
Please be advised that your application cannot be accepted if the required translations are not provided.
How will Hungarian citizenship affect my British citizenship?
It will not affect it, as both Hungary and the United Kingdom recognise dual citizenship.
